How Arc Fault Protection Works

In order to understand how arc faulty protection devices work, you need to understand what an arc is. Electricity is a complex phenomenon, but an arc occurs when current passes through a normally non–conductive media, such as air. Lightning is probably the best–known example, though it’s on a much different scale than the arcs that can occur within your home. Electrical arcs often happen as a result of damaged or old wiring, whether caused by a nail through wiring in the wall or cracked insulation on the cords of your electronic equipment. Arc fault protection shuts off the power when it detects the presence of an arc. While it can help to deter the risk of fires, it should not be used to "solve" poor quality wiring installation or the use of damaged electrical equipment.

Your Arc Fault Protection Options

There are two basic options when it comes to arc fault protection. You can either install an Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter that functions as an outlet for a particular part of a circuit, or you can install an arc fault protection system that replaces your standard electrical panel, thus offering protection to your entire home. Ordinary breaker boxes are not designed to detect the dangerous electrical arcs that can occur in the home, which is what makes arc fault protection so critically important.

Don’t hesitate to reach out to our team if you want to make sure that your arc fault protection service needs are handled correctly the first time. We can walk you through your options and make sure that you come away with a high quality upgrade to your electrical system. Simply give us a call today so that we can get started.
