Allergies Getting Bad? Why Not Upgrade Your Air Conditioner’s Air Filter?

We have a wide range of outdoor allergens, and if you are a resident in our area who is affected by them, you know how difficult this time of year can be. Having a whole home air conditioner makes it easier to keep these allergens out of your home simply because your windows are shut, but this doesn’t mean these allergen particulates don’t get into your home – they do. And when they do, they become part of your home’s air flow. But there’s a way to help yourself without making a major change to your AC system: use a better grade of air filter.

Don’t I Already Have an Air Filter?

Every air conditioner comes with a standard air filter, but the job of this air filter isn’t to improve your home’s indoor air quality, it’s to capture large particles of dust and dirt and stop debris from entering your system. In fact, your standard air filter can’t capture particles that are less than 10 microns in size, and with the average allergen being between 3-5 microns, it’s safe to assume that you’ll be suffering. But changing out your standard air filter for a more effective one can help relieve many of your allergy symptoms.

It’s About the Weave

What makes one particular air filter better than another? It has to do with the filter media and the weave of the filter media. Better air filters will have a much tighter weave in their filter material; additionally, the filters are folded in a v-shaped formation. The tighter weave and v-shaped folds capture many more particles passing through the filter media, typically 3 microns in size. This allows for more capture of allergens and better allergy relief for you and your family members.
