Every air conditioner can benefit from a little TLC every now and then, especially here in Fredericksburg, TX where our summers come hot and brutal. Some it it can be performed by a trained technician, and we strongly recommend schedule a maintenance session with us at least once and year and possible twice just to keep your air conditioner in the best shape it can be. But you can perform maintenance steps of your own, both during the summer and throughout the entire year. These steps are simple and don’t take much time, but they can make a huge difference in the performance and longevity of your air conditioning system. We’ve spelled out a short list of them below.
- Change the Air Filter. Most air conditioners come with an air filter designed to catch dirt, hair and other detritus as it passes through the system. They help keep your air clean, but they need to be cleaned or replaced themselves every month or so. You can purchase new filters at any home improvement store, and replacing them is a snap.
- Keep the Outdoor Unit Clear. The outdoor portion of your air conditioner is responsible for venting hot air into the outside atmosphere. If the vents get clogged with leaves or other detritus, it can cause serious problems. Check on the outdoor unit every few weeks, especially after a storm or heavy weather, and make sure the vents stay clear,. You should also keep a space at least 18 inches wide around the unit, free of any stacked objects.
- Adjust the Thermostat. Your thermostat is likely programmable, which lets you set the temperature you like and turn on and off when needed. Set the temperature at 78 degrees, and turn your system off at night, when the weather is cooler. You can open windows and run the fan in the evening, reducing strain on your system.
