All About Inverter AC Technology

In Texas, air conditioning is hardly a luxury. To keep us safe and healthy, and to keep our homes a halfway reasonable temperature during the hottest stretches of the summer, air conditioners are a necessity. But it can cost quite a pretty penny to keep that air conditioner running so much of the time. How can we stay comfortable without having such high electric bills? Is there a solution?

In fact, there is a great way to cut your energy usage, cut your electric bill, and not put your comfort at risk at all. You can stay just as cool with an inverter AC while saving energy and money. What is inverter AC technology, and how does it work? We’ll explain below.

How Air Conditioning Works

Let’s begin with a little refresher on the basics of air conditioning. A compressor (in the outdoor unit) kicks on when the thermostat calls for cooling. It pushes the refrigerant through the coils, where it absorbs heat from inside your home (in the indoor unit) and then lets that heat dissipate (back in the outdoor unit again). 

Indoors, there’s a blower fan with a motor to power it. Once the heat is sucked out of the air in the indoor unit, that now-cooled air is blown through your ducts by the blower fan. The refrigerant continues to cycle, carrying heat outdoors all the while, until the target temperature is reached and the system shuts down, waiting for the next time the thermostat will call for cooling.

How Inverter Air Conditioning Is Different

Imagine if, instead of a gas pedal, your car simply had an on/off switch. It could stand still, or it could be instantly driving at highway speed. That’s how traditional air conditioners work. If cooling is called for at all, it only operates at 100%. But this is wasteful and unnecessary! Inverter ACs avoid that waste and excess.

These high-efficiency air conditioners are more precise, and provide what’s actually needed. It’s possible thanks to new compressors which can operate at varying capacities. Some are dual-speed AC units, which can use 60% power when full power is unnecessary. Others are truly flexible, variable-speed air conditioners which can use as little as 25% power.

These systems don’t require babysitting. They run at the lowest power setting they can in order to get the job done. When a heat wave drives up the need for cooling capacity, they automatically increase the power they’re using. When the need becomes lower, they automatically go back to saving you energy and money at the lowest possible setting.

There are benefits beyond the lower electric bills, too. These systems make a lot less noise when they’re using less power, making them quieter and less bothersome. And they actually cool your home faster, dropping the temperature as rapidly as they can before switching to a lower setting. Finally, of course, anything that saves you energy is better for the planet.
